Reporting Oil Companies’ Proved Reserves in 2016 Decline for Second Consecutive Year

Annual reports of 68 publicly traded oil companies indicated that their aggregate proved liquids reserves declined in 2016 for the second consecutive year. The decline in proved reserves was heavily concentrated in a few companies that reduced their estimated reserves from Canadian oil sands projects. Downward revisions of existing resources, relatively low extensions and discoveries, and relatively high production also contributed to a decline in proved reserves. Source: U.S. Energy Inform...

Ohio Opt-Out Will Cost State Billions in Benefits

Our new research shows that utility customers would pay a hefty price if more large customers were allowed to opt out of energy efficiency programs. In Ohio's case, they would pay billions of dollars. Fundamental fairness suggests that because these programs benefit everyone, everyone should pay for them.   The Ohio legislature is weighing whether to allow more large customers such as manufacturers to leave customer-funded energy efficiency programs. When a large customer opts out, it no l...

United States Remains the World’s Top Producer of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hydrocarbons

The United States remained the world's top producer of petroleum and natural gas hydrocarbons in 2016 for the fifth straight year despite production declines for both petroleum and natural gas relative to their 2015 levels. The United States has been the world's top producer of natural gas since 2009, when U.S. natural gas production surpassed that of Russia, and it has been the world's top producer of petroleum hydrocarbons since 2013, when its production exceeded Saudi Arabia’s. For the Uni...

As Coal Shipments Decline, Rail Remains Dominant Mode of Coal Transport to Power Sector

The U.S. electric power sector consumed 677 million short tons of coal in 2016, the lowest amount since 1984. Electric power sector coal consumption accounted for more than 93% of all coal consumed in the United States, and more than two-thirds of this coal was shipped either completely or in part by rail. Most of the remainder was shipped by barge, truck, or—for power plants located near a coal mine—by conveyor. Electric power sector coal consumption in 2016 was 35% lower than in 2008, when...

More than Half of Small-Scale Photovoltaic Generation Comes from Residential Rooftops

Generation from small-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems totaled about 37% of the annual generation from all U.S. solar PV electricity generators in 2016. EIA’s small-scale category includes PV systems that have less than one megawatt (MW) of generating capacity. Such systems are usually installed at or near residential, commercial, or industrial customer sites. In 2016, the residential sector’s share of total small-scale solar PV generation increased to 52%, based on EIA’s state-level estimates pu...

Leaving Paris Sends Wrong Signal, But U.S. Can Still Be Global Clean-Energy Leader if It Prioritizes Innovation

WASHINGTON—The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the top-ranked U.S. science and technology think tank, today released the following statement from David Hart, ITIF senior fellow, on the White House’s announcement regarding the Paris Agreement on global climate change:   It is very discouraging that President Trump is pulling out of the Paris Agreement to cut carbon emissions. The United States’ abdication of global leadership will diminish confidence in the pact and...
