STV and HDR Awarded the Design of Thayer Hall, Cornerstone of West Point’s Modernization Plan

NEW YORK, NYSTV, a leading professional services firm that plans, designs and manages infrastructure projects across North America, and HDR, a global employee-owned professional services firm specializing in architecture, engineering, environmental and construction services, today announced their selection for the design of Thayer Hall (Building #601) at the United States Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, New York, contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), working with New England District. In joint venture, STV and HDR will provide comprehensive architecture and engineering services for the deconstruction and reconstruction of this multi-story general instruction building. To renovate, retrofit and modernize the historic facility with resilient infrastructure, STV is providing engineering services and HDR is responsible for architectural design and preservation.

“It’s an incredible honor to partner with West Point as Thayer Hall enters a new era,” said Kim Vierheilig, president of the national Buildings group at STV. “STV brings a powerful combination of higher-ed insight, federal architecture experience and multidisciplinary engineering strength to this project – exactly what’s needed to deliver a modern academic hub worthy of the academy’s world-class cadets and faculty. Alongside HDR, we’re shaping a space designed to inspire and elevate future leaders.”

Thayer Hall is a key component of USMA 2035, West Point’s ambitious plan to modernize its campus facilities, infrastructure and academic capabilities, and the centerpiece of its Academic Building Upgrade Program. Originally built in 1909 as a riding hall and cavalry training facility, and later converted to an academic facility in 1958, it currently houses the departments of History, Mathematical Sciences, Behavioral Sciences & Leadership (BS&L) and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, as well as the Academy’s Audio, Visual and Media Support division. It also supports nearly every other department’s teaching needs, including Character Education and Military Science.

“As higher education design experts with long-standing commitments to serving federal clients, HDR brings its integrated, multidisciplinary architectural services to West Point as Thayer Hall modernizes for future generations,” said Doug Wignall, president, architecture, HDR. “With experience preserving historical landmarks, transforming academic campuses and modernizing legacy facilities for a changing world, HDR will deliver a standard-setting design in partnership with STV.”

The project will deconstruct and reconstruct the multistory facility while preserving and rehabilitating key historic elements from the original 1909 structure. Once complete, the upgraded Thayer Hall will feature two additional floors and become the new academic hub for USMA’s humanities disciplines. The revitalized building will include general instruction classrooms, lecture halls, labs, a library, auditorium, mock courtroom, administrative offices and a variety of student and faculty support spaces. A 1955 addition will be demolished and replaced with a modern, compatible extension. The interior design will introduce daylight and support modern pedagogy, creating a more engaging and inspiring environment for cadets and staff. The exterior will reflect West Point’s rich heritage and military gothic architectural style, incorporating design elements that will inspire and impress prospective and current cadets, educators, alumni and visitors alike. The entire facility will be brought up to current standards for security, accessibility and sustainability – while honoring the building’s legacy and maintaining the integrity of the historic site.

STV brings decades of experience delivering large-scale projects for military institutions and higher education campuses, with a longstanding dedication to West Point’s mission. The firm’s portfolio at the U.S. Military Academy includes campuswide studies like a new central chiller plant, renovations and expansions at Bartlett Science Hall and Grant Hall Barracks and major new facilities such as the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School and the award-winning Thomas Jefferson Hall Library and Learning Center. The firm’s successful work at West Point reflects a deep understanding of the academy’s unique operational requirements, mission priorities and campus culture.
