WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Paul W. Edmondson, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, issued the following statement on the death of Richard H. Driehaus:

“Richard Driehaus had a passion for historic preservation, as well as a keen understanding of how historic places provide a unique character to our communities, and how they contribute to the quality of people’s lives all across the country. Richard recognized the power of historic buildings and landscapes to inspire, and through his philanthropy, he supported preservation projects and organizations that demonstrated that power. With Richard’s passing, the entire historic preservation community has lost a partner and a friend. He will be missed but his tremendous preservation legacy will continue.”

For a number of years, the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation has been a major sponsor of the National Trust’s historic preservation awards program. In 2015, the Driehaus name became synonymous with preservation excellence through the creation of the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation National Preservation Award, the highest national recognition bestowed on preservation projects. To date, 19 projects in 13 states have received this honor.
