Ground was broken Oct. 18 on One Vanderbilt Avenue, a 1,401-foot class A office building that will become the second tallest tower in New York City. Thornton Tomasetti’s Construction Engineering practice is providing connection engineering and Tekla modeling services to development manager Hines to help the project team meet its aggressive construction schedule.

The 1.6-million-square-foot building, designed by architects Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, is scheduled for completion in 2020. A development of SL Green, One Vanderbilt will occupy a full city block adjacent to Grand Central Terminal. The 58-story structure will feature column-free floors with floor-to-ceiling slab heights ranging from 14.6 feet to 20 feet, a 30,000-square-foot amenity floor and direct connections to the area’s mass transit network, which will receive $220 million in upgrades as part of the project. TD Bank has signed on as an anchor tenant and will occupy 200,000 square feet.
