Arup has appointed Anna Squire as Global Rail Leader and Stefan Sanders as Lead for the UK, Middle East and Africa (UKMEA) - the firm’s largest region.
Anna Squire
Anna has more than 25 years’ experience in the infrastructure design and construction industry in the UK, USA and Australia. She joined Arup in 2006 and has led many large, complex projects from conceptual design through to construction, including metro, heavy rail, freight, high speed rail, and light rail.
Based in Sydney, Anna will continue working on city-shaping projects including Sydney Metro and Canberra Light Rail, whilst steering Arup’s Global Rail business.
"Rapid urbanisation and population growth means that rail continues to be a vital mode of transport globally. Expanding cities and the need for sustainable methods of transportation, means that we have seen a rise in the number of urban rail projects and we are well positioned to meet this growing demand by harnessing our global network of rail experts."
Stefan, who has almost 30 years’ experience in consultancy and management, will lead a specialist team of multi-disciplinary engineers and consultants working on rail projects across the region. His focus will be on helping clients provide better solutions to increase capacity and connectivity, and enhance performance and passenger experience.
Stefan Sanders
Stefan started his career at British Rail in 1989, then spent seven years with Halcrow working on UK and overseas rail privatisation and restructuring projects before joining Arup in 2003. He has worked with a range of clients, including in the UK the Department for Transport, local government and train operators on railway procurement and rail reform during his time at Arup. Stefan has also worked with clients in the Middle East and South Africa.
"Rail passenger numbers continue to grow year-on-year so increasing capacity, performance and efficiency across the rail network is now more critical than ever. Whilst conventional upgrades to railways will continue to be vital, we also need to harness best practice in operational management and the latest technology to ensure existing and new infrastructure will serve the needs of the next generation. ”
Stefan and Anna’s appointments follows the retirement of Colin Stewart, the firm’s previous Global and UKMEA Rail Leader, after 40 years at Arup.
