Global recycling efforts help strengthen infrastructure, reduce waste and support more sustainable construction
DETROIT, Michigan — Edward C. Levy Company (Levy), a global leader in sustainable materials management, recycled more than 6.9 million tons of material – including concrete, aggregates, asphalt and iron and steel scrap – worldwide in 2025. More than half of these materials were recycled in the U.S., while 3 million tons were repurposed internationally, helping communities around the world strengthen infrastructure through sustainable materials management.
“The way we build infrastructure has a real impact on how people get where they need to go safely every single day, and it starts with how we recycle and reuse materials," said Tom Green, Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Levy. “Using recycled materials reduces waste, limits energy use, keeps construction projects on track, and supports good-paying jobs in communities across the world.”
A major driver of this impact was more than one million tons of Recycled Asphalt Product (RAP). RAP is made by reclaiming asphalt from old roads and reusing it to build new ones. Recycling asphalt reduces the need for raw materials and requires less energy than producing asphalt from scratch, in turn, lowering carbon emissions. In 2025 alone, nearly 900,000 tons of Levy’s RAP was recycled in Michigan, supporting projects across the state. Globally, Levy’s recycling efforts helped communities maintain safer, smoother roads while reducing their carbon footprint.
Beyond RAP, Levy recycled more than 5 million tons of iron and steelmaking slag globally. Instead of being sent to landfills, this material was processed and reused in cement, concrete, and aggregate applications, forming the foundation of the infrastructure we use every day. Reusing slag eliminates waste and helps to conserve natural resources.
Levy’s recycling initiatives help communities lower project costs, improve material availability, reduce environmental impacts, and meet sustainability and infrastructure goals. With more than a century of experience, the company continues to invest in innovative recycling processes that support resilient communities and long-term environmental stewardship.
